We are part of an agenda, all planned out | Paying for Breathing next?

Carbon Credit Scam: Pay Indulgences For Sin Of Breathing

Carbon Credit Scam: Pay Indulgences For Sin Of BreathingNick GiambrunoIn the Middle Ages, the Catholic Church convinced the commoners to buy indulgences to alleviate their sins. And they made a fortune in the process.

Similarly, today, our overlords—the mainstream media, central bankers, and their political allies—are working overtime to convince the commoners to pay for their alleged climate sins.

Enter carbon credits, government-issued permits that grant you the privilege to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide.

Although advocates promote them as a way to “save the environment,” in reality, carbon credits are nothing more than a devious mechanism to tax, regulate, and control you.

It’s not a coincidence that the most philosophically and ethically bent people are promoting them.

For example, at a recent World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, participants revealed and touted an “individual carbon footprint tracker.” It will track where people travel, how they travel, what they eat, and what they consume.

Carbon accounting is already creeping into many places, like Google Flights.

Carbon Credit Scam continues

A federal carbon tax is already a reality in Trudeau’s Canada, and it’s causing the price of food and other goods and services to soar. But Canadians haven’t seen anything yet—the federal carbon tax will triple by 2030.

In short, there’s a growing push to implement the carbon credit scam worldwide. And that’s not a coincidence.

Remember, central banks only exist to harvest wealth from the populace through inflation and redirect it to the politically connected, an insidious practice known as seigniorage.

Fiat currency is the usual mechanism central banks use to perpetuate this fraud. They get most people to run on a hamster wheel most of their lives chasing after confetti money they create with no effort.

However, there is a limit to this process.

For example, the governments in Venezuela and Zimbabwe have debased their currencies to such an extent that they are worthless. They have squeezed as much wealth out of their populations through seigniorage as possible.

Governments in the US, Canada, the EU, and others still benefit from seigniorage, but they sense they are not getting as much juice from the squeeze as they used to. Price increases are hitting multi-decade highs, and the US dollar, the euro, and other fiat currencies are quickly losing their luster.

In other words, central banks are debasing fiat currencies to the point where they can no longer extract as much seigniorage as they used to. That presents bankrupt Western governments with a big financial problem and is why they need to find a new way to harvest wealth from their citizens.

That’s where carbon credits come in. They’re the new mechanism of seigniorage designed to transfer wealth from you to the politically connected.

The idea is to get people to run on the hamster wheel chasing carbon credits, an artificial construct governments create with no effort.

Think of it like this…

Imagine if Tony Soprano forced everyone in his neighborhood to buy “breathing credits” from him, which grant you the privilege to breathe a certain amount of air. And that, naturally, it would cost Tony Soprano nothing to create as many of these “breathing credits” as he wanted. He could also hand them out to his friends and others who did favors for him, creating a corrupt patronage system.

This is basically what governments plan to do with carbon credits. Except they are also gaslighting you by telling you they are helping save the planet. Without that patina of propaganda—which the media, academia, and the rest of the establishment reinforce—there’s a good chance the people would revolt.

Roman rules - again? February or The month of Mercedonius

(Not sure about this)

The length of February was finalized when Julius Caesar remade the Roman calendar and assigned the month 28 days and 29 days. In 713 B.C., February was officially added to the Roman calendar.

What was the calendar before then - seasons and star positions?  The Saxons called February “Sol-monath” which means “cake month,” because they would offer cakes to the gods during February. But it wasn't called February before the Roman/Minoan!?!

The name of February comes from the Latin word “februum,” which means purification.

February was named after a purification ritual which was like an early Roman spring cleaning festival.

🌑*new moon*

According to Slate, the Roman 10-month calendar was based on the moon cycle, and therefore called a lunar calendar. The Roman calendar used at that time began in March and ended in December; were there months in between? Nobody knows for sure, but general consensus says the Romans largely wrote off the winter as unimportant to the harvest, and therefore never bothered to keep track. That system only worked so well. Over time, the seasons and the months with which they were associated began to drift. For this reason, the Romans needed a change, and the months of January and February were born.

The month of Mercedonius

From around 750 B.C., there were two new months on the Roman calendar: January and February, and early on, both those months were only 28 days long, according to Reader's Digest.  Believing even numbers to be bad luck, Roman king Numa Pompilius added some days to January but left February as is.  This solved the Roman problem of the old 10-month calendar for a while, but similar issues began to crop up, and it was back to the drawing board.

One solution to the season-to-month drift was an entirely new month called Mercedonius.  But check this out: only Roman priests could decide when Mercedonius would occur in any given year, and otherwise, no one ever really knew what day it was.  Consider that next time you schedule a dentist appointment.

Clearly, there had to be a better way.  Here, Julius Caesar enters the story. His idea was to base the calendar off the cycles of the sun, and in doing so, devised the 365-day calendar that's much the same as the calendar we use today, minus Mercedonius, and with a few other important differences: the Romans slightly miscalculated the solar cycle, leading to one entire day disappearing each century in the relationship between the solar cycle and the calendar page, according to Britannica. This was fixed later on in the Gregorian calendar and with the modern-day leap year.  Nevertheless, February still only had 28 days, possibly because Roman death rituals (?) and other types of purification rites were performed during this time, as Slate reports.

👇Mercedonius- The Intercalary Month- VATICAN SORCERY! HOLY SHIT! 1260 years!!!!

Oh boy -Something big is going down in the spirit world . This whole Pope resignation has to do with the Devil wanting his due. It’s time to pay the piper. The Vatican Whore has had her time in the limelight and that Whore is gonna be put to death, but not until she births her “child”-  Satan incarnate.

This whole boot of Pope Ratzinger (The dirty rat) has something to do with this Roman extension of the calendar.  They need to do something with the days in the calendar to make something in the Spirit world fit their agenda.  It has to align with the tropical calendar.. the heavenly alignments.  They are reverting back to the pre-Julian calendar I think.

Any Math scholars out there??

The mensis intercalary has to do with the menstrual cycle of the woman. This is what YaHuWaH has told me. The woman was considered unclean for 30 days when she had her period and had to be put outside the camp. They must need to put this Pope out now to fulfill their spiritual mission to bring in the Antichrist. Their deal with the devil.

It has something to do with their ancient Roman dieties as well.  Remember we talked about Romulus and the Gregorian calendar. Romulus was suceeded by a guy named Numo Pompilious - the first king of Rome. He actually established the first pope!

Numa Marcius, son of Marcus, was the first Pontifex Maximus of Ancient Rome!  April 21st , 753 BC was his birthday and it was on that day that Rome was founded also!!  1260 years ago!!!!   DO YOU HEAR ME!!!   TIMES TIMES and a Half! 1260 years to the day.  Remember I said that the Birthday was the highest Satanic Holiday. Something is set to happen on April 21st!  It has to be!  They have to get the extra month inserted now.

The feeling is the key. THE WAVE!

Synchronicity at play. I research Walter Russell (again) and this post showed up... it's all good!

YOUR BODY IS A PROJECTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND THOUGHT

By Dylan Charles | Source: Waking Times

At the cutting edge of science and technology today is artificial intelligence and robotics, which are being driven by ever-increasing computational speeds made possible by quantum computing. When the capacity of technological computation rivals the speed of our capacity to think and process information as humans, then we will reach the singularity and a superintelligence will emerge in our society, triggering runaway technological growth.

While this is coming in the very near future, we are also now learning how this very type of quantum creative power is already at play in our world via the interplay of human consciousness and the material world.  In the early 1900’s, the famous double-slit experiment demonstrated that material objects can actually change their composition based on what is being held in consciousness when said objects are observed.

In other words, the world around us is being created moment by moment, and our expectations of what the world should be is what gives it form. In order to alter its form or to change course, we can use the directed focus of the mind to envision and feel something different for ourselves, and in time and through repetition, this reality will eventually take form. The feeling is the key.

This is something we do all the time. The best example of this, perhaps, is the human body, which can by some measures be considered a projection of human consciousness. We see this everywhere. For example, just look at people’s bodies and consider their health, and you’ll be able to get a fair idea of what type of thought patterns and belief systems are at work in the everyday silence of their own minds.

The best example is someone with radiant health, high energy and intense vitality. This person didn’t get to be this way by happenstance. The patterns of thought in their mind support their belief that their body can be a radiant storehouse of health. This, in turn, supports the development of habits which create such well-being. This type of person engages in clean, clear thinking about their health and body, and the result is this very type of body. They intentionally feel how they want to feel.

On the other hand, a person with an out of shape, obese, or disease-ridden body undoubtedly engages in thought patterns and beliefs about health which support such poor health. They never believe that they can be disease free or of ideal weight, and so their thoughts reinforce habits which deteriorate their health. Inside this person’s mind is chaos, confusion, fear, self-loathing and other patterns which create dis-ease.

There is more to this, though, if we consider the possibilities unfolding in the realms of quantum physics and superintelligent technology. We are beginning to get a clear idea of what the quantum field actually is and what it can do. It appears to be waiting for us to purposefully interact with it.

The quantum world is waiting for us to make a decision so that it knows how to behave. That is why quantum physicists have such difficulties in dealing with, explaining, and defining the quantum world. We are truly, in every sense of the word, masters of creation because we decide what manifests out of the field of all-possibility and into form.

The thing is, the quantum level of reality isn’t a local and insignificant aspect of creation. It is all around us, and it is the most fundamental level of creation aside from the unified field itself. The human energy field is interacting and influencing the quantum field all around us at all times and the energy of our beliefs and intentions are infused into our energy field because they are defined by the energy of our thoughts and emotions. ~Brandon West

Final Thoughts

This may sound to some like a woo woo way of looking at the world, but there is immense practicality in this world view for improving your life, your health, your relationships, and your overall happiness. The takeaway here is that you must take control over your own mind, and plant thoughts that support the projection of a healthy body and life. As Dr. Joe Dispenza notes, you’ll need to decide what you want, then put your attention on creating that reality.

“Whatever it is that is your vision, you’re just going to have to be passionate enough to invest your attention and your energy into that future over and over again, till all of a sudden you start seeing feedback in your life.” ~Dr. Joe Dispenza

 Wait, what?

Earth's Spinning Inner Core Recently Paused Then Flipped Its Direction
Earth's Spinning Inner Core Recently Paused Then Flipped Its Direction

Earth's inner core, a hot iron ball the size of Pluto, has stopped spinning in the same direction as the rest of the planet and might even be rotating the other way, research suggested on Monday.

Roughly 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) below the surface we live on, this "planet within the planet" can spin independently because it floats in the liquid metal outer core.

Exactly how the inner core rotates has been a matter of debate between scientists—and the latest research is expected to prove controversial.

What little is known about the inner core comes from measuring the tiny differences in seismic waves—created by earthquakes or sometimes nuclear explosions—as they pass through the middle of the Earth.

Seeking to track the inner core's movements, new research published in the journal Nature Geoscience analyzed seismic waves from repeating earthquakes over the last six decades.

The study's authors, Xiaodong Song and Yi Yang of China's Peking University, said they found that the inner core's rotation "came to near halt around 2009 and then turned in an opposite direction".

"We believe the inner core rotates, relative to the Earth's surface, back and forth, like a swing," they told AFP.

"One cycle of the swing is about seven decades", meaning it changes direction roughly every 35 years, they added.

They said it previously changed direction in the early 1970s, and predicted the next about-face would be in the mid-2040s.

The researchers said this rotation roughly lines up with changes in what is called the "length of day"—small variations in the exact time it takes Earth to rotate on its axis.

Stuck in the middle
So far there is little to indicate that what the inner core does has much effect on surface dwellers.

But the researchers said they believed there were physical links between all Earth's layers, from the inner core to the surface.

"We hope our study can motivate some researchers to build and test models which treat the whole Earth as an integrated dynamic system," they said.

Experts not involved in the study expressed caution about its findings, pointing to several other theories and warning that many mysteries remain about the center of the Earth.

"This is a very careful study by excellent scientists putting in a lot of data," said John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Southern California.

"(But) none of the models explain all the data very well in my opinion," he added.

Vidale published research last year suggesting that the inner core oscillates far more quickly, changing direction every six years or so. His work was based on seismic waves from two nuclear explosions in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

That timeframe is around the point when Monday's research says the inner core last changed direction—which Vidale called "kind of a coincidence".

Geophysicists 'divided'
Another theory—which Vidale said has some good evidence supporting it—is that the inner core only moved significantly between 2001 to 2013 and has stayed put since.

Hrvoje Tkalcic, a geophysicist at the Australian National University, has published research suggesting that the inner core's cycle is every 20 to 30 years, rather than the 70 proposed in the latest study.

"These mathematical models are most likely all incorrect because they explain the observed data but are not required by the data," Tkalcic said.

"Therefore, the geophysical community will be divided about this finding and the topic will remain controversial."

He compared seismologists to doctors "who study the internal organs of patients' bodies using imperfect or limited equipment".

Lacking something like a CT scan, "our image of the inner Earth is still blurry", he said, predicting more surprises ahead.

That could include more about a theory that the inner core might have yet another iron ball inside it—like a Russian doll.

"Something's happening and I think we're gonna figure it out," Vidale said.

"But it may take a decade."

This Island Appeared Out of Nowhere, With Life Forms Never Seen Before
This Island Appeared Out of Nowhere, With Life Forms Never Seen Before. View from the summit of Hunga Tonga -Hunga Ha'apai island. (Photo: Damien Grouille)

When a new island arose from the South Pacific in 2015, it created an unprecedented opportunity not just for geologists and volcanologists, but for biologists and ecologists, too.

In 2015, a submarine volcano in the South Pacific erupted, forming the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai island, destined to a short, seven-year life. A research team led by the University of Colorado Boulder and Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) jumped on the rare opportunity to study the early microbial colonizers of a newly formed landmass and to their surprise, the researchers discovered a unique microbial community that metabolizes sulfur and atmospheric gases, similar to organisms found in deep sea vents or hot springs.

"These types of volcanic eruptions happen all over the world, but they don't usually produce islands. We had an incredibly unique opportunity," said Nick Dragone, CIRES PhD student and lead author of the study published this month in mBio. "No one had ever comprehensively studied the microorganisms on this type of island system at such an early stage before."

"Studying the microbes that first colonize islands provides a glimpse into the earliest stage of ecosystem development -- before even plants and animals arrive," said Noah Fierer, CIRES fellow, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at CU Boulder and corresponding author on the study.

A multi-institutional team of researchers on the ground collected soil samples from the island, then shipped them to CU Boulder's campus. Dragone and Fierer could then extract and sequence DNA samples from the samples.

"We didn't see what we were expecting," said Dragone. "We thought we'd see organisms you find when a glacier retreats, or cyanobacteria, more typical early colonizer species -- but instead we found a unique group of bacteria that metabolize sulfur and atmospheric gases."

And that wasn't the only unexpected twist in this work: On January 15, 2022, seven years after it formed, the volcano erupted again, obliterating the entire landmass in the largest volcanic explosion of the 21st century. The eruption completely wiped out the island and eliminated the option for the team to continue monitoring their site.

"We were all expecting the island to stay," said Dragone. "In fact, the week before the island exploded we were starting to plan a return trip."

However, the same fickle nature of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH) that made it explode also explains why the team found such a unique set of microbes on the island. Hunga Tonga was volcanically formed, like Hawaii.

"One of the reasons why we think we see these unique microbes is because of the properties associated with volcanic eruptions: lots of sulfur and hydrogen sulfide gas, which are likely fueling the unique taxa we found," Dragone said. "The microbes were most similar to those found in hydrothermal vents, hot springs like Yellowstone, and other volcanic systems. Our best guess is the microbes came from those types of sources."

The expedition to HTHH required close collaboration with members of the government of the Kingdom of Tonga, who were willing to work with researchers to collect samples from land normally not visited by international guests. Coordination took years of work by collaborators at the Sea Education Association and NASA: a Tongan observer must approve and oversee any sample collection that takes place within the Kingdom.

"This work brought in so many people from around the world, and we learned so much. We are of course disappointed that the island is gone, but now we have a lot of predictions about what happens when islands form," said Dragone. "So if something formed again, we would love to go there and collect more data. We would have a game plan of how to study it."

starving for CO2?

CO2 – The Best Thing That Could Happen To Our Planet

Did you know that plants are starving for CO2? That’s because CO2 is at one of the lowest levels in the history of our planet as you’ll see on the chart below.

And what about historical temperature levels? Do they correlate with CO2 levels? Check out this chart.

There is no correlation. It’s the Sun, water vapor and things like dust in the atmosphere from volcanoes and a lot of other things that have the more effect earths temperature.

Plants can’t exist without CO2. CO2 has been described as the miracle molecule of life on our planet.

Tesla electric car in 1901

Is This The Real Tesla Car Secret?

.

Did Tesla Harness 200 V Of Free Energy To Power His 80 HP Pierce-Arrow Car?

The photo above shows a homemade omni directional antenna that is capable of long range WiFi broadcasting – but it can also harness EM energy in the air around us.  Lightning is proof that there is abundant free energy in the air.  A lightning bolt can have a charge of 3 billion volts and transmit 3000 amps – enough to power an average city for months.

200v_flux_capacitor_Y_valve

Here is the  secret that Tesla knew, that the physicists, oil companies and the elites don’t want you to know. At a mere 6′ above the ground there is a potential difference between the ground and that point of 200 V and at 3′ it is 100 V. That’s free electrical energy just waiting to be used if you know how to tap into it.

Tesla knew this way back in 1901 when he set out to demonstrate it to the world.

In 1901 Nikola Tesla began constructing the Wardenclyffe Tower (Tesla Tower). He understood ancient technology and set out to reeducate the World by demonstrating what the Egyptians knew and successfully built over 4000 years ago. If the Egyptians were to apply an insulating casing around the pyramids and reinstalled a capstone antenna (plated with an electricity conducting and transmitting metal like silver) their pyramids would once again harness, store and transmit wirelessly this free and unlimited electromagnetic energy. Even though they are thousands of years old they are still able to function today as electrical power generating power plants. Their main structure is fully intact.

Do you think the above Tesla patent drawing was use to power his electric car?

Over 80 years ago Nikola Tesla utilized a  6-foot vertical antenna rod and tapped into this free and infinite source of energy and powered a 80-horsepower alternating-current electric motor that he installed in a car.  Tesla was so successful in tapping into this free energy source that the electrical power harnessed was sufficient enough to power the electric motor and drive a converted (gasoline to electric) Pierce-Arrow at speeds of 90 m.p.h.

In 1932 (81 years ago) Dr Moray also successfully tapped into this free and infinite source of energy using a simple long wire antenna.  A long piece of insulated wire acts as an antenna. The very cheap long wire antenna captures electromagnetic energy.

An antenna is nothing more than a transducer that converts free electromagnetic (EM) energy into alternating current (AC electrical power) or vice-versa. There are two basic types: the receiving antenna, which intercepts free EM energy (RF) and delivers the AC current to electronic equipment (radios, TVs, computers, cell phone chargers, lights, generator motors, heaters, fans … ), and the transmitting antenna, which is fed with AC from electronic equipment and generates radiant energy.

The simplest antenna is a length of wire, connected at one end to a transmitter or receiver. More often, the radiating/receiving element is placed at a distance from the transmitter or receiver, and AC is delivered to or from the antenna by means of a transmission line, also called a feed line or feeder.  There is so much free energy in the air above that the use of longer wire antenna in excess of 500 feet or strung higher than head height can produce lethal amounts of electrical current

But what are we taught in school?  Or ask any electrician, you’ll be told that earth is a ground. It’s connected to the neutral wire in all electrical systems. But what is the earth really?

The Earth we stand on, walk run and play on is negative electrically charged and acts like a big spherical capacitor. The Department of National Resources in Canada estimates the Earth’s net charge to be between 400,000 and 500,000 coulombs, with an equal and opposite charge in the atmosphere.

Unpacking the Origin of the Deep State, the Trump Coup, Covid and Climate Change

The Clash of the Two Americas Vol 4: The Anglo Venetians Roots of the Deep State

By Matthew Ehret and Cynthia Chung (2023)

Purchase link: https://canadianpatriot.gumroad.com/l/Clashoftwoamericas4

Book Review

This final volume of The Clash of the Two Americas is my favorite. In it, Ehret provides more historical examples, both from North America and elsewhere, to illustrate his views on Malthusianism, colonialism, oligarchy, multipolarity, globalizaiton and the historic role of British intelligence in undermining US sovereignty. See review of volumes 1,2 and 3 at Hidden History: The Clash of the Two Americas, How British Bankers Shaped America’s 20th Century and How History Helps Us Understand What Russia and China Are Up To

Ehret also uses Volume 4 to comment on contemporary events, including the 2020 electoral coup that defeated Donald Trump, COVID, the debate over anthropogenic global warming and the Great Reset.

My favorite sections include his commentary on the Trump legacy, the historical Venetian role in the Anglo-Venetian/Anglo-Dutch Deep State and the role of faulty computer modeling in both the Covid lockdowns and “catastrophic” climate change debate.

The 2020 Electoral Coup that Defeated Trump

Although I have issues with a number of Trump’s policies (especially his promotion of vaccines and Zionism,) I agree with Ehret’s observations that Trump was the first “nationalist” president in 60 years and posed to the globalist forces that control the Deep State.  To this end, Trump adopted numerous positive policies aimed at improving the US economy and the well being of Americans, including:

  • Programs to re-industrialize the (by bringing factories back from the Third World)

  • Gutting the National Endowment for Democracy (CIA-funded program to destabilize foreign governments)

  • Ending CIA support for Syrian rebels

  • Increasing economic cooperation with Russia and China

  • Ending decades of US involvement in World Trade Organization (WTO) financial programs,

  • Reducing US involvement in NATO

  • Withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO)

  • Cancelling US involvement in 2016 Paris Climate Accords

  • Making the US energy self-sufficient for first time in decade

In describing the 2020 electoral coup that awarded the presidency to Trump’s opponent Biden, Ehret documents the long involvement of Dominion and sister company Smartmatic voting machines in electoral fraud in Mexico, Venezuela, the Philippines and the US (including the 2000, 2004 and 2008 elections).

The Venetian Roots of the Deep State

The Venetian empire, founded by Roman oligarchs fleeing the Visigoths and Huns in the 5th century AD, lasted a little over 1000 years. By 1350, they controlled world finance through their control of the world’s gold and silver bullion, their monopoly on maritime trade, the 120-180% loans they made to European leaders and their wide reaching intelligence networks.

During the 16th century, the Venetians (the first to establish a private central bank in 1507), shifted their power base from Venice to Amsterdam. After Amsterdam first gained independence from Spain in 1581, a Venetian-Dutch alliance formed enabling Venetian Bankers to create a similar private Central Bank in Amsterdam in 1619. In 1688, this alliance would work with English protestants seeking to dethrone the Catholic king James II, to “invade” England and install Dutch merchant William and his wife Mary II (daughter of James II) on the English throne. In 1694, William would create the Bank of England, granting it the express power to loan out gold certificates in excess of its bullion holdings (in other words, granting them control of money creation).*

Covid, Climate Change and Stochastic Statistical Modelling

The section on Covid looks mainly at the work of Neil Ferguson, the British epidemiologist who achieved global prominence through predictive modeling leading to the 2020 global lockdowns.

Ferguson confidently predicted 500,000 deaths from COVID in the UK and 2 million in the US.

Given his past record, it’s astonishing anyone took him seriously, especially when he prevented other statisticians from reproducing his results by refusing to release an unredacted copy of the code he used. .

  • In 2002, he predicted 50,000 people would die of Mad Cow Disease, which subsequently resulted in only 177 deaths.

  • In 2005, he predicted 150 million people would die of Bird Flu. Only 282 died between 2003-2008.

  • In 2009, he predicted 65,000 deaths due to Swine flu, which ended up killing 457 people.

Ehret goes on to explain the stochastic or Monte Carlo Method Ferguson uses to produce such outlandishly erroneous results.* Apparently climate scientists use a similar stochastic (random sampling) approach to predict catastrophic climate change.  Ehret’s 2021 paper In Defense of CO2 (which he includes in his appendix) enumerates a number of problems with stochastic modelling to predict climate change:

  • Because the physical space-time shaping the discoverable universe is intrinsically non-linear, it can’t be expressed (or graphed) as linear equations, as many climate scientists have done.

  • It’s too easy for totally random data sets to be skewed by computer programmers who aspire to shape government policy. Specifically Ehret has concerns this modelling is being used to promote artificial scarcity, depopulation and corporate backers of the Great Reset and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, rather than ending colonialism, poverty and war.

  • Global temperature charts reveal global warming tapered to a near standstill between 1998-2013, despite IPCC predictions they would increase in tandem with atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

  • Medieval ice cores reveal global temperatures were were significantly warmer than today (the Vikings grew wheat in Greenland) despite much lower atmospheric CO2 concentrations

  • Prehistoric ice core records reveal that increases in atmospheric CO2 tend to follow (rather than precede) warming temperatures.

*The stochastic or Monte Carlo method of statistical modeling is used to estimate potential outcomes where randomness or uncertainty is present. It relies on repeated random sampling.

  • Archaeological sites show that upper-class individuals from the Iron Age started living in bigger houses.
  • During the final days of the Roman Republic, influential families would show off their wealth through art and banquets.
  • In the High Middle Ages, feudal lords had complete economic and political control over their serfs.

To ask what it was like to be rich in the past is about more than comparing the lifestyles of modern-day billionaires like Elon Musk to Mansa Musa or Marcus Licinius Crassus. When you study the history personal wealth, you are also learning about the history of income inequality, and the economic developments that allowed these upper-class individuals to build their private fortunes.

According to the historian Peter V. Turchin, who relies on mathematical modeling to make sense of the societies past and present, those developments turn out to be cyclical rather than linear, with patterns in the global financial system repeating themselves across centuries. In other words, Musa and Musk may have more in common than you’d think.

Burial gifts from 1000 BC

We do not know a lot about daily life or income inequality at the start of the Iron Age, a time when Latin tribes first set foot on the Italian peninsula, and David — the very same David whom the Bible says defeated Goliath with a sling shot — is believed to have ruled over the United Kingdom of Israel. The general absence of written scripts leaves us in the dark.

Archaeological excavations suggest that primitive hunter-gatherer groups were more egalitarian than the complex civilizations that emerged after the agricultural revolution. Focusing on the Near East, researchers from Durham University found that societies became increasingly unequal as they transitioned from the Neolithic period into the Iron Age, between 1200 and 900 BC.

In small rural communities, most individual households were more or less identical. However, as the first large cities took shape, those households began to vary drastically in size and shape. Researchers not only found a positive correlation between household size and personal wealth, but also between size and socioeconomic status, political influence, and even health.

It’s difficult to know exactly how the elites of this time lived. But a glimpse comes from the objects they maintained after death. For example, people whom archaeologists and historians generally believe to have been elites of the Hallstatt culture, which was primarily centered around present-day Austria in 1000 BC, were sometimes buried with luxury goods, like intricate bronze vessels, Greek pottery, and silk imported from the East.

In ancient Crete, wealthy women were buried with precious perfumes and bronze or silver jewelry, while their husbands were buried with swords and spearheads — treasures that only a select few could have afforded in life, let alone death.

Roman riches around 1 AD

The city of Pompeii, which was incredibly well-preserved under a thick coat of ash produced by the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, provides a clear window into what it like to be well-off during the turn of the millennium. Once again, data analysis of archaeological sites around the volcano shows that social inequality increased as time went on and the Roman Empire became more technologically advanced.

If you were a rich Pompeiian, you didn’t live in a house but in a domus. The average domus had a surface area of 3,000 square meters. They usually included an atrium, multiple bedrooms and living rooms, servants’ quarters (wealth in Rome was displayed primarily through your servants), studies, and a garden decorated with flowers, frescoes, and sculptures. Oh, and farmland. Lots of farmland.

One of the most obvious signs that you were part of Pompeii’s elite was having running water in your private domus — and sometimes even a small-sized swimming pool. Although Pompeii maintained an extensive plumbing system for about 100 years before Mount Vesuvius destroyed the city, most citizens could only access running water through public fountains.

In 2017, a more vivid image of what it was like to be wealthy in Pompeii was discovered via an inscription in one of the city’s tombs. It described a days-long party thrown by a young, wealthy man. The party included “456 three-sided couches so that upon each couch 15 persons reclined,” the inscription read, adding that the wealthy party-thrower was of such “grandiosity and magnificence” that he had 416 gladiators fight over several days for the partygoers’ entertainment.

Writing for Aeon magazine, Peter Turchin — the mathematical historian — explains that wealth distributions across history are primarily determined by the supply and demand of the labor market. If there is a surplus of labor, the upper class profits while the lower class languishes. But when there is a shortage of labor, it is the lower class who profits, and so the wealth gap shrinks a little.

The population of Rome, writes Turchin, expanded rapidly in the first century AD, cheapening labor and expanding the influence of Roman elites until a plague brought population numbers back down again. The deadly Antonine Plague, which killed between 5 and 10 million individuals, correlated with a rage in wages in one of the most affected areas: Egypt.

In the period before the Antonine Plague, before Rome turned from a republic into an empire, archaeologists find that upper class people were living a life of arguably unparalleled luxury. Protecting their assets via the Senate, the richest families in Rome were in a constant competition to acquire the finest artwork and throw the biggest, most exotic banquets.

The feudal lords of 1000 AD

In terms of wealth, as much changed between 1 and 1000 AD as did between 1000 BC and 1 AD. The Holy Roman Empire had officially established itself as the dominant power in Europe, carrying on the legacy of ancient Rome. The Holy Roman Empire was a feudal society wherein noble houses obtained land from the emperor in exchange for paying taxes and providing military services. And while they enjoyed luxuries like access to good food, fine art, and lavish castles and manors, most likely they also had to play administrative or other political roles in the church.

Landowners, in turn, maintained a similar arrangement with their serfs. The serfs cultivated crops for the nobility in exchange for the right to grow some of their own food on the side. Just as the landowners were obliged to present their superiors with armies during times of war, so too were their serfs obliged to take up arms if they were told to.

“The tug of war between the top and typical incomes doesn’t have to be a zero-sum game,” says Turchin, “but in practice it often is.” When England’s feudal population doubled, the demand for work increased. This means that landowners could charge peasants higher rates while also paying fewer benefits, ushering in a “Golden Age” for aristocracy that ended in yet another plague, the Black Death.

Back to the present

Early on in his historical survey of wealth and inequality, Turchin remarks that socioeconomic change need not be spurred by purely economic factors. Culture can also move the markets, often in illogical directions. The uniquely capitalist tendency to view financial success a reflection of merit rather than circumstance, for instance, has built a celebrity culture around businessmen that did not exist in the past.

When we acknowledge the correlation between income inequality and labor market participation, we find that the wealth gap in western countries significantly decreased after World War II, reaching a level that had not been seen since before the American Civil War, the gap started growing again towards the end of the 20th centuries, and continues growing to this day, bringing Musk closer to Musa.

The New MLK Sculpture Is Officially a Meme

More by Elaine Velie 1/20/2023

On Friday, January 13, the city of Boston
unveiled a 22-foot-tall bronze sculpture of Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King titled the “The Embrace” (2023). The headless and bodiless memorial in Boston Common, created by artist Hank Willis Thomas, is based on a photo of the couple hugging after Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Butwhile some praised the new statue, others, like the Washington Post’s Karen Attiah, argued that the artwork de-radicalizes and de-racializes King’s legacy, and many have raised an entirely different issue with the design: From some angles, the bronze memorial can appear to depict multiple lewd acts.

“In time we will see this statue for what it truly is … Martin Luther King going down on his wife,” said Leslie Jones, host of the Daily Show, in a segment this week. Correspondent Dulcé Sloan joined to express a different point of view, adding that from another perspective the work looks like “hands cradling a big penis” and calling it a “sexual Rubik’s Cube.”

Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King first met when they were students in Boston, and in 1955, Dr. King led a 20,000-person march from Roxbury to Boston Common, where “The Embrace” now stands. The civil rights leader also delivered a powerful speech in Boston in 1963, in which he warned of the perils of Northerners’ disinterest in the Civil Rights movement happening in the South, and another in 1965 on “de facto segregation.” This rich history, and the question of whether “The Embrace” does or does not represent it, may be precisely why the sculpture has sparked such heated discussions — especially given that it’s not the first time an MLK monument falls short of expectations. In the Daily Show, Sloan pointed to the leader’s memorial in Washington, DC. “This man literally marched for freedom, and he has no legs!” she said.

The sculpture’s $10 million price tag has also raised eyebrows. Some pointed to causes toward which the money may have been better spent, such as alleviating America’s homelessness crisis. In a tweet, user @thatgirlkeeee suggested that the money also could have gone to Black communities instead of toward creating a “symbolic gesture.”

“It is sending a whitewashed, multi-million dollar message,” Attiah of the Washington Post wrote in a series of Tweets about the new sculpture, stating that the disembodied figures continue a pattern in which White America “butchers” the legacy of MLK with cherry-picked quotes about love and non-violence. “While ignoring his radicalism, anti-capitalism, his fierce critiques of white moderates,” Attiah continued. “MLK — in his fullness — is still too much for them.”
